Hedi Does Saint Laurent Drag
First off ignore the hats. Everyone found them distracting....
But the 'monumnetal' premiere collection Hedi Slimane designed for Saint Laurent seems, well, more like a thesis on well worn YSL motifs
All the tried and true tropes (Verushcka safari jackets: Check; Betty Catroux: Check; Le Smoking: Check) were there minus some ornate Ballet Russe details and models of color (Seriously:
M. Saint Laurent loved a model of color and with this topic still hotly debated this was a huge miss for Slimane)
I'm not saying the collection isn't salable and that Slimane's signature aspiration slim fit wasn't present, I'm just sayin' it ain't re-inventing the wheel.
And that was a lot of hype for an homage.

Linda Evangelista's Court Couture... Which is Your Favorite Look?
Someone just made this mother's day!
Linda's battles for child support from French fashion mogul François-Henri Pinault have ended in a secret settlement which means two things:
1. She could have won that $46,000 / month for "child support". That's a lot of Muse bags PPR's gonna have to push! (Or unfortunate Burger King commercials for wife Selma Hayek)
2. No more Prada coolness from Her Evangelista-ness.
Like Naomi, Winona and hell, even Lindsay before her, Linda worked that courtroom couture selling the media on her good girl wronged vibe (although maybe not a convincing single mom in need look)
(Ever the 'supe', Linda never misses a camera angle to work)
So which of her law-suits fit her best?
Personally I wouldn't get out of bed for less than that swingy grey contrast black jacket in pic two.

Face It, Chloe Sevigny's Closet is Cooler Than Yours
Unless you've sot stored away some bits of costuming you did for a Harmony Korine or Alber Elbaz sketches of Oscar gowns
Perpetual It Girl (seriously, does she age?) Chloe Sevigny shows her pals at Opening Ceremony what's in her closet and wile the clothes are intriguing (I remember selling those Comme Des Garcons heart cut-out jackets) what most startled me is how much she can fit into an East Village closet! That's a true pack rat there, honey. One in a pageboy and an S+M collar.
This is only part one and like any good serial, they left us with a cliffhanger.
To be continued....

Au Revoir, Loulou
Long time Yves Saint Laurent muse, Loulou de la Falaise be dead and fashion loses an icon
They met at a tea party in 1968 and the rest was history. Redefining collections of chunky jewels and "le smoking" jacket later and Loulou was a part of the YSL history-making machine
Darlin', you're joining that all nite dance party fabulous guest list with Yves, Nan Kempner, Diana Vreeland and Halston in heaven.
Hope to be sitting at your banquet someday

RESORT to This: A Trench is Your Best Friend
(Zac Posen with Coco Rocha workin' it out)
Menswear shows have begun but before we move on let's just talk about one last trend from the Resort 2012 collections. You're gonna need a trench
(The fortune cookie hem shown at Yves Saint Laurent is a kick of Oriental influence)
But really, when do you NOT need a trench. It's one of a finely tuned wardrobe's keystones. However, with tiered versions shown at Zac Posen and other quirky details or unexpected fabrics, the Resort trenches felt like new takes on the classic
(To the left Altuzarra's boxy multi-lapel anorak style trench)
(My favorite of the season: Celine's translucent slicker in gradient grey. Adore!)

RESORT to This: Walk Softly and Carry a Big Tote
(Louis Vuitton)
*gift with purchase* feels sad and puny
(Yves Saint Laurent goes matchy-matchy with classically nautical)
(Bottega Veneta's signature woven leather in a new shape: bigger than a model tote!)
(Ikat get behind beaded fringe, Anna Sui)
And there were even options for boys
(Orange you glad Burberry created a leather tote for ya' boys?)
And in fur!
(The Row.... ok, that's maybe a backpack, but it felt "in the thread")

Fashion Understatements of the Day
"I have a lot more sympathy for people who have to take the train to work every day. What a load of nonsense! No, no, no. Designers are artisans who are extremely privileged to have a poetic profession.”
-Yves Saint Laurent's longtime business partner Pierre Bergé in response to the question "Are the current pressures of the fashion industry causing designers to crash?"
Meanwhile, perma-good sound bite, Karl Lagerfeld, answered:
"I’m not the right person to cry about weakness and things like this, but maybe I’m not human.”
Maybe, Karl, but at least you don't have to take the subway.

Revolving Diors
Ok with John Galliano suspended and obviously not coming back, a successor is needed for Christian Dior. Someone who can handle both the Ready to Wear and the Haute Couture.
Here's some of my suggestions
1. Jean Paul Gauliter
A very obvious choice what with his enfant terrible reputation and his love for the dramatic. He could easily carry Dior forward and is available for another house with fashion history to take on since he left Hermes.
2. Olivier Theyskens
I know he's busy with Theory and all, but after a triumphant turn at Nina Ricci and an equally dramatic oust, critical darling, Theyskiens, would be up for the challenge, I'm sure.
3. Stefano Pilati
With rumors swirling once more that the Gucci group is on the verge on letting him go from Yves Saint Laurent, he'd be open for a job and obviously familiar with the pressures of taking on such a revered French fashion house.
4. Giambattista Valli
This man knows how to dress a woman so she is the epitome of glamour and sophistication. He has a large celebrity following, which LVMH will need to pull Dior's reputation back (there will unfortunately be a negative view connected until someone is able to wipe the slate clean).
With so many talents around, though, there isn't a shortage of designers to take over and perhaps we can look at this as a breath of fresh air and forward momentum for Dior.

Don't I Look Cute Today: Properly Appreciated
I wasn't so sure if the boots were working with this look until this loud black teenage girl out of a group of girls shouted at me "Mister, I want your boots!" from the party store next to my house. I felt proper affirmation.
She is, afterall, my target audience.
(White little boy dress shirt, navy YSL vintage tie, Mr Taurus' striped mesh tank as vest, blue French Connection jeans and loud black teenage girl approved motorcycle boots)

Don't I Look Cute Today: Wednesday August 4th, 2010
A quick breakfast with Miss W in Soho. She thought the look was very "London". She would know, she's moving there Monday to work at Erdem. Doin' it, Miss W! And despite being camera shy, I'm gonna get a pic with you before you go!
(Uniqlo blue striped tee, vintage argyle vest, YSL brooch, striped pants, little cute beat up loafers)

RESORT to This: Palazzo Pants
Things you MUST have in your life if you want to embrace the Palazzo Pants that were a key trend of Resort 2011:
1. A great vacuum/ Swifter/ maid to remove all dust bunnies
2. A steamer to keep those pants in their crisp, unwrinkled state
3. Nowhere to be, cuz if you try running in these, honey....

I Heart Yves
I was feeling beat after a long day of work, so I popped into the UES Housing Works for a nosing around of the goods.
Wouldn't you know peaking from inside the jewelry case was this fab little gold plated vintage YSL heart pin with the multi stones. When I worked in vintage, this Ballet Russe era of Yves Saint Laurent was super coveted and therefor, tres cher. But now I have a piece of my own. Patience is a virtue when it comes to brooches.
Cuz you know I pinched that bamma up! And for a measly $18. Nice. Can't wait to Summer wardrobe the ish out of this.
