Peter Jensen's Spring 2014 Collection is a Study on Andy Warhol

British designer showed his men's spring 2014 and women's resort 214 simultaneous in London and took advantage of this tandem project to play up Andy Warhol and his famous gaggle of gals from The Factory 

Andy was deviously intrigued by people. He always was fascinated with finding out what made these madcap people around him unique and then siphoning it out of them...
"I always run into strong women who are looking for weak men to dominate them"

He was an avid social critic who loved to document every moment and felt far more comfortable as the artist than the subject of scrutiny...

He was crazy shy and insecure...

I just do art because I’m ugly and there’s nothing else for me to do.

He embraced commercial products for both their simple design and commerce...

Three Reasons I love Resort Collection (In Pictures)

When I was in Toronto, my friend, fellow fashion writer Naomi Mdudu from The Fashpack and I were talking about Resort collections and how much we liked them. She brought up some good points on why they are the emerging fashion darling of the designer collections and added to my personal reasons why I love these "in-betweeners"



1. They offer sharp and necessary change for the designers at retail


It's late December / early January and you are now officially bored with your tartans and tweeds you so romanticized mere months ago. You want change from the mounds of snow and 30 and below. Enter tropical prints and soft silks

2. They allow designers to test Spring collection ideas


Your strengths lie in designing graphic, clean colorblocking and mixed media shoes. The public's pep for peplums has popped. Now you know before you waste valuable assets and store space to these ideas. Carrying over proven ideas into the next season is a lot easier when you have a test lab without the Spring delivery pressures

3. They're no longer for rich folks who 'resort'


Resort began as a way to showcase swimwear for luxury clients who don't know what the term 'cabin fever' means. The jet-set elite who literally jumped in their jets for warmer climes at the first snowflake. Worry not, you 1%, Resort still shows lighter weights and, of course, a swimsuit or two, but these are also great pieces for work or wear with heavy coats - those aforementioned tweeds are instantly exciting again!

"Who has the time to go on vacation anymore?" wondered Phillip Lim to Style.com at his Resort 2014 showing this week. 


Sure enough the collection had a nice mish-mash of lux laddies who languish on islands post New Years and the women who have to schlep back to the office
































Of course, keep in mind, I'm a full time fashion writer. These are the things ladies wear to work in my experience

Resort to This: Erdem's Mom Must Have Been One Cool Chick

"I found some amazing pictures of my mom on holiday," Erdem Moralioglu stated as his inspiration for Resort 2014

Wow, judging from the lace, sheers and full skirts in this sweet and strong Erdem showing, she sure was one foxy momma!

Bill Gaytten's Last Hurrah at Dior

On Friday, Bill Gaytten showed his last interim head designer Dior collection leaving the door open for Raf Simons' Spring 2013 debut. But there were really beautiful and fun pieces in this serviceable swan song 

Crisp calico shirting feels so fresh. And love the piping trim.  

Full and tulle = Springtime cool. 

My co-worker is obsessed with backless dresses and this one would be primo if she were not my co-worker and instead some lady who doesn't have to work for a living. Those shoes are an unfortunate pairing. 

Farewell, Mr Gaytten. Enjoy your Galliano namesake label makeover (he's at the helm there now) and It Can't All Be Dior awaits Raf's contributions with breathe that is bated.

But again, I ask you, are the Resort 2013 lines skewing more Winter or is it that's what I'm always drawn to? Could be my own personal bias.

I'm in Love with Lanvin

The Lanvin Resort 2013 collection is swoon worthy

Filled with stiff box pleating and uniform structure, it doesn't necessarily read Hamptons and Capri, but rather it further mines the rich rebel aesthetic Alber Elbaz goes to time and time again

There were Grecian and sporty draped pieces as well, but the strongest looks hinted not to what Spring 2013 will show but further still to when the nip in the air is not for the luxurious few basking in the Mediterranean in January

Prada Recycles

Remember this lip print skirt from Prada Spring/Summer 2000? 

Well Prada thought it fresh again, 11 years later

A kiss is just a kiss, but if you ask me, I prefer the lipstick pattern from that famous 2000 collection

But that's a little too of the time, so Miucca wisely left that to the archives to mine some other time.


Now if this was for the Spring 2012 collection or, God forbid, Fall, I'd be quick to cry afoul, but Resort lends itself to a lite, casual air, so this double dip/ double lip don't offend.

RESORT to This: A Trench is Your Best Friend

Menswear shows have begun but before we move on let's just talk about one last trend from the Resort 2012 collections. You're gonna need a trench

(The fortune cookie hem shown at Yves Saint Laurent is a kick of Oriental influence)

But really, when do you NOT need a trench. It's one of a finely tuned wardrobe's keystones. However, with tiered versions shown at Zac Posen and other quirky details or unexpected fabrics, the Resort trenches felt like new takes on the classic
