Pride Weekend 2012

Shameful gay-fession: I've never been to Pride before. But this year I not only attended, I marched and danced in the Housing Works procession

There was even some swirling

And waving around house shaped signs demanding gender equality for everyone

Funny how over two years into a relationship and one year after gay marriage is passed in New York, I truly was filled with PRIDE

Last Nite's Party: Design on a Dime

Another amazing year!

Last nite I volunteered for New York based designer, Juniper Tedhams, who was a doll and created quite the graphic room with campaign beds and 19th century French chandeliers

Other favorites included:

Without realizing it I fell madly in love with the Nickelodeon room. Again! Although they switched up last year's Spongebob them for a Ninja Turtles vibe

Make sure to pop by this weekend for some spectacular finds!

Design on a Dime is open to the public all weekend at

The Metropolitan Pavilion

Housing Works Design on a Dime 2012

You got a dime? You got design!

Well maybe more than a dime, but either way tonight is the grand opening event of Housing Works' annual "Design on a Dime" featuring interior decorators, furniture designers and home decor celebs creating vignettes that are a mix of deeply discounted donated goods and pieces curated from the archives of Housing Works.

Stock up on Eames, Chippendale and art nouveau at great prices with 100% proceeds benefiting HW and people living with HIV / AIDS

This Easter, We Completed Our Cafe Table Hunt

Since moving, Mr. Taurus and I have been on the hunt for the perfect cafe table to go with our high back and egg chairs. At Housing Works Gramercy, we spied this bar stool colab

(Extra moment on the subway. All couples should bring their own reading table onto the N train)

In its current bare state the table had potential

But when we glazed it 50's aquamarine and steel base, that baby came alive!

We're crafty like that.

The Ethical Fur Solution

With the New York Fall 2012 runways ablaze with fur, obviously this ugly trend is not going anywhere. So how does one ethically bridge the gap between heart and sleeve?

Answer: vintage. A fur that already exists causes no further damage and without people adopting old furs into their wardrobe, add to overstuffed landfills. It's the perfect green solution to an otherwise deadly fad.

And what perfect timing since the 96th and Broadway Housing Works is hosting a recycled and vintage fur event tomorrow

So now not only does a second hand fur benefit the animals you've spared the knife, but all $$ spent goes to people living with AIDS. Charity squared!

At 11am Saturday, Housing Works 96th Street

Housing Works Joins Occupy Wall Street for World AIDS Day

Today is World AIDS Day and Housing Works is ready to march with the merry men of Occupy Wall Street!

"Dozens of protesters will dress as Robin Hood, a reference to both the “Robin Hood” Financial Transaction Tax and the need for New York State millionaires to contribute their fair share to the fight against AIDS in New York, which disproportionately affects the poor and people of color."

What the H is the 'Robin Hood Tax'? I'll admit I had no idea. A quick Wikipedia moment and my "I don't have a finance degree so I'ma try and make sense of this" explanation is it's a tax for converting one type of currency into another. This is relevant to Occupy Wall Street since that's what hedge funders and stock brokers do and has been a slick trick of the 1%-ers forever to dodge taxes.

This is relevant to Housing Works because New York, like all of America (and now the world) is in a rough economy forced to cut social programs and funding due to limited resources. The Robin Hood tax proposes taxing people for actions that are direct sneaks to avoid paying taxes that pay for charitable organizations.

If you have the day off, won't you join in? And if not, make merry with the men if you see them today. They're working for an honorable goal.

***Lastly, all HW's will be closed today to set up for the annual Holiday event, but will be doing a clothing drive at each location. drop clothes or goods off for the homeless living with AIDS.
