Three Reasons I love Resort Collection (In Pictures)

When I was in Toronto, my friend, fellow fashion writer Naomi Mdudu from The Fashpack and I were talking about Resort collections and how much we liked them. She brought up some good points on why they are the emerging fashion darling of the designer collections and added to my personal reasons why I love these "in-betweeners"



1. They offer sharp and necessary change for the designers at retail


It's late December / early January and you are now officially bored with your tartans and tweeds you so romanticized mere months ago. You want change from the mounds of snow and 30 and below. Enter tropical prints and soft silks

2. They allow designers to test Spring collection ideas


Your strengths lie in designing graphic, clean colorblocking and mixed media shoes. The public's pep for peplums has popped. Now you know before you waste valuable assets and store space to these ideas. Carrying over proven ideas into the next season is a lot easier when you have a test lab without the Spring delivery pressures

3. They're no longer for rich folks who 'resort'


Resort began as a way to showcase swimwear for luxury clients who don't know what the term 'cabin fever' means. The jet-set elite who literally jumped in their jets for warmer climes at the first snowflake. Worry not, you 1%, Resort still shows lighter weights and, of course, a swimsuit or two, but these are also great pieces for work or wear with heavy coats - those aforementioned tweeds are instantly exciting again!

Three Makes it a Trend: Mariacarla Boscono is Killin' it for Fall 2013

If I've never mentioned it before, I LOVE me some Mariacarla Boscono! Her chilly eyes and sharp cheekbones with that wash of raven hair... yes X three! 


And Fall 2013 had her at rare form

Watch Mariacarla cut quite the figure opening the Hermes show with a swatch of wool and a deadly stare 






























You can put Mariacarla in a shapeless sweater and bathing 
skull cap (?) and that B shines her light through it all

Three Makes it a Trend: Second Skin Boots

The message is clear for Fall 2013: keep the baby powder handy! 

Boots shown on the Fall runways of Paris are second skin close

First seen Sunday at Céline... 

the trend carried over in thigh high and chains at Chanel

and Lydia Maurer showed a cropped and tight style at Paco Rabanne 

But in a world of ever increasing obesity and global warming 

is this a climate controlled runway only fantasy?

And instead of terrible, it's gonna be hot hot hot!

This trend continues on to this day. Every Winter windows show unfortunate broads (and a few gents) that can't come in from the cold.

A Window Into New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week day 1 and an early trend has already emerged: windowpane pattern prevalence

I'd never advocate matchy matchy, but this Creatures of Comfort two piece could be broken up into some spot on looks. (Love the shout back with the wood panes in the background)

Perhaps after years of responding to negative body image pushing, designers have decided to pack on the pounds, cuzwhen you trim the fat from the Paris runways a significant trend is weighing in: Spring 2013 is gonna be heavy, man

(Layered, heavyweight satin and fur shoes at Céline. Summer calls, ladies!)

Do designers wanna wrap up and hide from a world riddled with political unrest and shaky economies? Do they figure the impending Mayan doomsday in December means none of this mess will make it to stores anyway?


Whatever the reason coats, layers and heavier fabrics abound for the first half of the year

Does New York Make You Prematurely Grey?

One of the funny side effects of a public transit dependent life is how up close and sequestered you get with people. At this magnified moment you can really get a good view of what's going on. On my commute yesterday home and into work today, I noticed a continuous streak : people are going grey. Young people and middle aged people alike, but the propensity to grey seems pretty prevalent right about now.


There's slashes at the bangs and stashes at the temples. Wisps in the fly-aways and collections in the comb-overs.


But why are so many Q train riders in need of some Nice n Easy? Is it the hectic work schedules where 8 or hell, even 9 hour days are a treat. Summer Fridays are non-existent and lunch breaks are reason for rumbling.


Is it the dependency on an archaic transit system that continues to decrease customer satisfaction while increasing rates? Or the scrape to the finish to get home to the apartment that you work so hard to afford the luxury of renting?



Or is this merely that New York living allows closeness to truly examine people's noggins? I mean outside of New York how often does the opportunity for intimacy to inspect occur? For all we know this is a generational thing or yet another side effect of a diet based on mutated corn and the cows that eat it.

A little side observation how pop culture is on this trend: Kelly Osbourne, Lady Gaga and Kristen McMenamy have all embraced grey hair while George Clooney continues to be the ne plus ultra male sex symbol and the nation has become enraptured in the ultimate beach read for sad, sexless marriages "50 Shades of Grey".


Perhaps it isn't all so black and white.

Everyone's gettin' on board Carly Rae Jespen's "Call Me Maybe" as the song of the Summer, but must the lip synch poorly viral video trend continue( with the exception of Hilary Rhoda, who killed it!)

Three Makes it a Trend: Someone's Pumped for the Dark Shadows Movie!

At The MET Ball, there was a lot of Dark Shadows fans coming out of the woodwork

Mr Valli is just missing a cane and a cape to win Barnabas Collins look-a-like of the year. Take note Johnny Depp: this is how you should have looked. Not like drag queen Liza.

Prada Spring 2012 is Really Getting Some Mileage

All stylists wanna do is put Prada's vroom vroom vroom in the room room

(Just a taste of the many lady stars and model types that drive the Prada fashion force)

These looks really rev my engine! 

Three Makes it a Trend: Brick S***house

Men have always felt the pressure to be built like a brick wall, but now that mandate is taking on a whole new meaning with this emerging trend on the Fall 2012 runways.

That Moschino look above would be great as a two piece suit or broken all up (how great a navy lightweight Merino wool turtleneck with those pants) and that hot ginger could sell me anything at Gaultier, but Jeremy Scott cranked up the color for a 90's feeling Pantone facade

Color and pattern are my game, but that is one tough look. I guess you could say the best way to play with this fashion concept is a little with classics or a full suit with balls.
