VOGUE-sicles!

The September issues are out in full effect but until I get my hands on the Lady Gaga American Vogue, I casually poured through the August issue with Marion Cotillard. 

Buried deep what should I unearth but recipes! In VOGUE! How dare they! 

Granted they were for popsicles, which seems like one of those Get Out of Jail Free items for models to consume, so I figured, when in Vogue? 

Of course I chose the Caipirinha which included a new fangled (for my whiteness) Brazilian rum, Cachaça, which despite Wikipedia informing me is pronounced "Ca-SHAH-sa", Ms GL and I had a hoot shouting "Ca-Shock-Ka!" during the whole boozy process

After muddling some lime, straining some sugar and making a mess, the results were Ca-shocking! 

                           
    

Child, I'd never have had the VOGUE idea to make me own ice pops.

Does New York Make You Prematurely Grey?

One of the funny side effects of a public transit dependent life is how up close and sequestered you get with people. At this magnified moment you can really get a good view of what's going on. On my commute yesterday home and into work today, I noticed a continuous streak : people are going grey. Young people and middle aged people alike, but the propensity to grey seems pretty prevalent right about now.


There's slashes at the bangs and stashes at the temples. Wisps in the fly-aways and collections in the comb-overs.


But why are so many Q train riders in need of some Nice n Easy? Is it the hectic work schedules where 8 or hell, even 9 hour days are a treat. Summer Fridays are non-existent and lunch breaks are reason for rumbling.


Is it the dependency on an archaic transit system that continues to decrease customer satisfaction while increasing rates? Or the scrape to the finish to get home to the apartment that you work so hard to afford the luxury of renting?



Or is this merely that New York living allows closeness to truly examine people's noggins? I mean outside of New York how often does the opportunity for intimacy to inspect occur? For all we know this is a generational thing or yet another side effect of a diet based on mutated corn and the cows that eat it.

A little side observation how pop culture is on this trend: Kelly Osbourne, Lady Gaga and Kristen McMenamy have all embraced grey hair while George Clooney continues to be the ne plus ultra male sex symbol and the nation has become enraptured in the ultimate beach read for sad, sexless marriages "50 Shades of Grey".


Perhaps it isn't all so black and white.

Newsflash: Magazines Continue to Struggle

Seriously though numbers came out for the first quarter of 2011 publishing year and only VOGUE had an increase (12.7 % for the year so far). Let that sink in for a minute before I drop another bomb.


Critics are saying this March 2011 issue is why VOGUE avoided the otherwise universal fate:

Behold the power of Lady Gaga. Her March cover shot by Mario Testino pulled in the youngin's known as little monsters by the dozens and drove VOGUE's sale figures sky high (the issue sold over 100,000 copies more than March 2010).


I'm not gonna critique the cover or the star or anything of such, but I will say this a new generation of stars are emerging and the youth vote counts (which is surprising considering how often we hear they read everything online) so let's see how other fashion mags respond to the numbers (Glenda Bailey, of course, just wants to permanently slap Jennifer Aniston on the cover. Oh Glenda, always out of touch)

The Anti-Gaga Meat Dress

Famous Chinese actress, Gao Yuanyuan is the star of a new PETA campaign to encourage a vegetarian lifestyle

The campaign is targeted towards China, where the growing economy has increased people's availability to formerly cost prohibitive meat.

Eating meat is now seen as a symbol of wealth and luxury in this historically veggie friendly country.

Meat isn't luxurious or sexy and it boggles the mind to think that emerging economies would promote such an archaic mentality especially as resources are growing scarcer everyday. Go veg!


Not only is it better for the world, it's pretty easy to style!

But not just any old pants. In the Spring 2011 issue of i-D Magazine she's working the high-waisted, wide leg trend I mentioned a bit back. 

Now if Lady No Bottoms found her way into these pants, perhaps the high and wides are gonna make a big wave afterall.
