I'm Not Classy, Nor Refined

Our 3rd floor neighbors are a class act. We just started to get to know them. Turns out one of them is a classically trained baritone and we had the pleasure of recently attending his vocal performance at the Brooklyn Conservatory.

When we got home after, they stopped by with flowers for us!

Wow. Classy. Hope we can keep up.

See it pays to get to know your neighbors.

Book Club: It's All About the Dress

(Photo: Kathy Yl Chan)

That shit storm of a Liz Taylor Lifetime movie with the once actress Lindsay Lohan touches down this Thanksgiving weekend, but if you really wanna know all about La Liz and Richard Burton, well "Furious Love" is really the go-to. But as Liz's longtime wardrobe go-to and wife of her personal make up artist, Ron Berkeley, Vicky Tiel had insider, entourage level scoop. And she dishes in her memoirs, "It's All About the Dress". But this isn't backstabbing tell-all, this is the kinda secret sharing you get from a bestie.

However, that said, tales come out about other celebs like Faye Dunaway, Marlon Brando, Woody Allen, Martha Stewart, and more.

And boy does she have something to say about designers like Yves Saint Laurent,Mary Quant, DVF and Louis Feraud, the former three she claims all stole from her! According to "Dress", Vicky invented the mini skirt, the wrap dress and designers posing nude in ads, amongst many other boasts.

Yes, Ms. Tiel is one of those Janice Dickinson types trying to undercut others who claim they were the first.

This is the perfect side dish this week for a full plate of trash TV and turkeys.

Book Club: Eyes of Laura Mars

Timing perfectly with Fashion Week, I'm devouring the novel version of "Eyes of Laura Mars", an admitted 'late nite drunken Ebay purchase' by Mr. G.

Now if you haven't seen this amazing movie that the book is based on (yes, you heard that right: the book is based on the movie!) well why do you even read my blog???

(The movie poster in French. Maybe if I watched it in another language it wouldn't be
so bad?)

Faye Dunaway plays photographer Laura Mars obsessed with producing slick commercial images of violence against stunning women, a not at all hidden homage to Helmut Newton.

Well, wouldn't you know it, even with all her work commitments piling up, all of sudden Ms. Mars starts witnessing first hand though a killer's eyes, attacks on her co-workers

(Pop them peepers!)

The movie makes no effort to make any damn sense of why or how, but they tried to flesh it out a bit with a tacked on history of E.S.P. storyline for Laura, but again, none of that matters. What's remarkable to me about the book is how they managed to nail Dunaway's cadence on the printed page. You can practically hear her beat these sentences out of her perfect pout

(oh yeah, there's a midget and a sorta Lady Day-esque outfit too... someone tell me what the Hell is going on in this movie???)

Hopefully the book ends differently than the movie, cuz that "twist ending" was pretty clunky and obvious.

Until then, here's a fun little video I found on YouTube that actually makes the movie look artsy. Enjoy.

Happy Birthday Faye!

I spent the afternoon celebrating by watching "Chinatown" with the cat.

You're welcome.

Doin' It: Ryn Tylor Spring 2011

(The designer, Miss Rebecca Tylor. I mean how great is she?!)

This weekend I went to the Spring 2011 Ryn Tylor fashion presentation. Rebecca's a friend and a New York designer with a youthful and energetic take on 60's and 70's sportswear. In her Spring line the tone was relaxed and sumptuously Summery with a hint of luxe and leisurely yacht club.

She showed in an art gallery space that made the bridge between the audience and the collection perfectly.

Let's take a look shall we:

I particularly liked this suit that our friend Mr RC was working like it owed him back taxes

and these little details like the red silk lining of the vest and the pocket and the gingham accents are what truly makes this look sing

 Smart!

This halter dress was Marilyn sexy but in a soft buttery peach (color got lost in the photo unfortunately)

This 70's pastel "work romper" I can see all over New York come Summer

Now, of course I can't go to a fashion/art show and not comment on the other attendees:

there were definitely some interesting fashions

But this lady I nicknamed Asian Joan Crawford, was clearly winning the nite's crown!

Although with my sober eyes I can see she's far more Asian Faye Dunaway

I was trying to keep up with Joan/Faye's sartorial challenge

me and Miss JB straight chillin' in front of a Rubik's cube

me and Miss BH givin' face

and on a light sidebar, Mr RC's socks matching his mark cracked us up!

make sure to grab some of Rebecca's pieces before they are all snatched up!
