Printed Pants Still a Thing

(Calla, Fall 2012)

Those Resort 2012 Stella McCartney pants that are huge editorial darlings right now

(Stella McCartney Resort 2012, the touchstone of printed pants)

are having heavy influence on the Fall collections of New York Fashion week

(Derek Lam, Fall 2012)

(Erin Fetherston)                                                  Fall 2012                                                         (Timo Weiland)

My personal favorite was Thakoon's leaf print which really brings this trend into Autumn

Could You Soon Buy Directly Off Style.com?

Yes, Style.com is moving into a tangible print magazine come October and while that's quaint, the real take away is the buried co-announcement it will start an e-commerce option too.

Fashionologie interviewed Style.com editor-in-chief, Dick Standen who confided

"We are working with six New York City designers to be announced during fashion week. They are going to make a very limited number of pieces available directly from their Spring [2012] collection, so that people will be able to buy them right away. We are going to coordinate it with the launch of the magazine so, technically end of October. They will be able to buy it and will receive a nice package in the mail within days."

So now if you're feeling Derek Lam's lamé or Donna Kern's kick pleats for Spring 2012 you can buy them right off the runway. This is a huge opportunity for instant connection to their audience and broadening their customer base beyond the well heeled ladies who usually reserve first dibs.

Designers Want You to Cocoon for Fall 2011

(the original)

It appears more than a few American designers attended  the "Balenciaga: Spanish Master" exhibition at the Queen Sofia Spanish Institute recently because there were numerous homages on this past week's runway to Cristobal's famous "cocoon coat"

(Marc Jacobs)

The shape is simple: a coat made of a clean, fluid sphere that is like a shell for the body and provides a pedestal for the wearer's head

(Narciso Rodriguez)

Introduced in the 50's at the height of The New Look, Balenciaga went against the grain of over-emphasizing a woman's hour glass figure and instead opened the silhouette that allowed the woman movement and a certain air of chic

(Derek Lam's cropped shearling was a fresh interpretation for 2011)

(Lyn Devon's sweatshirt style felt new too)

(Thom Browne exaggerated the shape big time)

Will this trend carry over to Europe? Will retail embrace this harder to sell shape? Will everyone being doing the turtle this Fall? We shall see....
